Statistically 3-4 out of every 100 babies born in Australia are in a breech presentation, 87% of these breech babies are born via a caesarean section. Discovering that your baby is in the breech, posterior or in a transverse position can be concerning, often leading to a caesarean section or an external cephalic version. An external cephalic version (ECV) is a procedure in which the baby is manually rotated through the abdomen, with an effectiveness rate of 50-60%, it entails risks (premature labour) and is painful.
Acupuncture and moxibustion may offer a safe alternative, potentially aiding in natural birth.
Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a holistic healthcare system developed over thousands of years in Asia. TCM has specialized protocols for pregnancy care, emphasizing fertility, childbirth, and postpartum recovery.
This care is increasingly recognized and valued in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, U.S.A, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, where acupuncture is offered in some specialized antenatal clinics and maternity hospitals.
Factors that increase the likelihood of having a breech baby include:
Ø More common in preterm deliveries and first-time mothers
Ø Foetal anomalies and hereditary predisposition (parent or sibling was breech)
Ø Associated with uterine or congenital abnormalities (e.g., fibroids, septate or bicornuate uterus, placenta previa)
Ø 10-27% chance of recurrence if previously had a breech baby
Ø Multiple pregnancies (twins/triplets) due to limited space
Ø Abnormal amniotic fluid levels
Ø Maternal hyperthyroidism
Statistics:
< At 36 weeks, approximately 4% of babies are in a breech position (87% of these are delivered via caesarean section).
< At 32 weeks, 7% of babies are breech.
< Before 28 weeks, 25% of babies are breech.
How effective is moxibustion and acupuncture for breech babies?
Various studies have been conducted with some indicating that Chinese medicine treatment (mainly the process of moxibustion and acupuncture) to certain points may successfully turn about 70% of breech babies.
In one study the acupuncture and moxibustion group demonstrated a significantly higher rate than that of the successful cephalic versions (ECV) compared to the control group. This suggests that moxibustion and acupuncture could be an effective method in encouraging breech babies to turn, potentially leading to safer deliveries and reducing the likelihood of caesarean sections.
What is involved in moxibustion?
Moxibustion treatment for breech presentation generally involves lighting a cigar-shaped moxa stick made from dried 'Moxa,' an herb also known as 'Chinese Mugwort' (Latin name Artemisia Vulgaris, or in Chinese pinyin, 'Ai Ye'). The burning of the moxa is used to stimulate these points in a process called 'moxibustion', which may be combined with acupuncture.
There are several techniques for performing moxibustion, utilizing different types of moxa tailored for specific conditions and body areas. For instance, 'direct moxibustion' involves applying moxa punk or cones directly onto the body, whereas 'indirect moxibustion' involves twirling a rolled moxa 'stick' over the body, commonly used for breech babies.
What is Our Treatment Approach?
Our treatment plan includes moxibustion at BL67 and the needling of different Acu-points. Typically, 1-2 sessions per week are necessary for several weeks, along with a personalized home care plan, which may help in preparing for birth, potentially reducing labour duration and the need for interventions.
Optimal Timing for Treatment
The best time for treatment is on receiving the news that you are in breech, so as soon as possible. This allows more time, so usually anywhere from 34/35 weeks up until as late as the due date.
Conclusion
Acupuncture and moxibustion offer a promising approach to managing breech presentation, emphasizing holistic care that benefits both the mother and baby. These techniques not only aim to reposition the baby for optimal birth but also support the mother's overall well-being throughout pregnancy. By integrating these therapies into prenatal care, expectant mothers may experience a smoother childbirth process, reducing the likelihood of interventions and promoting a more positive birthing experience. Engaging with a qualified practitioner ensures that each treatment is tailored to individual needs, paving the way for a healthier pregnancy journey.
